Yohana is 31 years old and married with one child who is 4 months old. He is a farmer from the county of Kitale, in western Kenya, where he has been farming for five years now. His main products are eggs, beans and maize, which are all sold locally. He also earns income from his motorcycle transport business and a small shop that he operates in the same region.
Yohana recently repaid a loan from Juhudi Kilimo of 30,000 KES, and has requested a new loan of 60,000 KES to expand his poultry farming operation. The extra income obtained from this project will help him improve his family's living conditions. He would like to start large-scale poultry farming in the next five years. He says that his major challenge has been the high cost of poultry feed.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
