In this Group: Sitan , Diandiè , Sira , Naminatou
"Sérieux" is a group of four married women from the Djiguisseme Association. They average 51 years of age, with an average of six children each, and live in nuclear families with their husbands and children in the Sido prefecture of Bougouni (Mali's third administrative region).

The members of the Sérieux group met each other through relations and neighbors. With the aim of finding sufficient business funds to satisfy their customers, they decided once more to join the microfinance institution, Soro Yiriwaso's loan program. They use their loans to trade in soap, fabric and other products. Sitan T., for instance, trades in condiments. The women are on their eleventh group loan, and all the previous loans were repaid on time and in full.

With this new loan, Sitan T., who is the president of the group, is planning on buying five baskets of tomatoes, five sacks of onions, two 25kg sacks of salt and five packets of "Maggi" stock cubes. She gets her supplies from wholesalers at the market in Sido and sells her goods at home on a retail basis, for cash and on credit, to a customer base made up of women and men.

With this loan she is hoping to make a monthly profit of 25,000FCFA, of which part will be reinvested in her business and the rest used to repay her loan and her children's health costs.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
