This group is called Las Estrellas de Guadalupe ("The Stars of Guadalupe"), in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of the region. The group has 11 members; they live in the State of Hidalgo in Mexico.

Señora Amalia C. is the treasurer of the group. She is 38 years old, studied until the third grade in secondary school and is a merchant. She has three children, aged 13, 10 and 6. Amalia sells pieces of pottery, such as kitchenware and seasonal ornaments, among others. She applies for a loan to invest in pottery, because she wants to expand her business, have a higher income and provide her children with education.

The photo was taken at the house of Señora Rosa Bautista who graciously offered her home for the group meeting. You can see the harmony and the friendly atmosphere that show the camaraderie and the bonds between each of the members of the communal group.

Señora Claudia is not pictured because her son took part in a Nativity play and she had to be there.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
