Yuvinalis is a farmer from the town of Nyamira in western Kenya. He has been in the farming business for 12 years and employs one farmhand. His mixed farm produces tea, maize, wheat and bananas, which are all sold locally. He solely depends on the income from his farming activities to supply the basic needs of his family.
Yuvinalis is 53 years old. He is married and has been blessed with six children who are between the ages of 14 and 32 years. Four of the children are currently attending school.
He has requested a loan of 45,000 KES through Kiva partner, Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow. He plans to use the profits from this investment to pay school fees for his children. He would like to expand his dairy farming in future by acquiring five high-yielding dairy cows.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
