Agnes is a farmer from the town of Murang'a in central Kenya where she has been farming for 18 years. She employs one farmhand. Her mixed farm produces milk, maize and beans, which she sells to the local market. She also earns income from her small-scale business.
Agnes is 48 years old and married with four children. Two of the children are adults and two attend school.
She has requested this loan of 53,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase an insured cow and construct a dairy unit. She says that this loan will enable her to acquire a quality dairy cow that will increase her income through the sale of milk. In future, she hopes to construct a good zero grazing unit that will enable her to increase the number of dairy cows from one to five.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
