46-year-old Bernard M. is a farmer from the town of Murang'a in central Kenya. He has been in the farming business for 10 years and employs two farmhands. His farm produces coffee and horticultural products, which he sells through a local cooperative society. Farming is his main source of income.
He has requested this loan through Juhudi Kilimo of 53,000 KES to purchase and insure a dairy cow. He hopes that his income, through the sale of milk and this loan, will help improve the livelihood of his family. His primary challenges are lack of reliable vet doctors and artificial insemination services. He hopes that in the future, he will be able to produce over 50 liters of milk daily.
Bernard is married with three children who all attend school.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
