Nineteen people in Tnaot Nhi village in Kandal province make up this village bank loan. Mrs. Son S. is a village bank president who has been selected by the other members. Each member will use their portion of the loan for different purposes to improve their family living.

Mrs. Son S. is a farmer who owns a half-hectare plot of land to grow rice to sell to support her family. She has some problems because her rice field is infertile. So to improve production, Mrs. Son S. is asking for a loan to buy fertilizer and rice seed. With the rest of the loan, she is going to buy fishing supplies because her husband, Mr. Tet Son, is a fisherman who is able to earn some money to support his family. Through this activity, they support four children, two of whom are employed in garment factories, but the others are studying in local public school.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
