Twenty people are members of a village bank loan group located in Pump Edth Village, in Takeo Province. Mr. Samat N. was selected by the other members to be the village bank president. Each member of the group will use their portion of the loan for a different purpose, but all hope to improve their families' living standards.

Mr. Samat N. is a village chief. He is a cow middleman (a broker between farmers and wholesalers) who earns money to support his family. He is the father of two children, a farmer and a student. His wife, Mrs. Lorn Chan, is a farmer who owns a 1-hectare (2.5-acre) plot of land. She grows and sells rice to support her family. Although they try to work hard, they earn little income. So to improve their family's living conditions, Mr. Samat N. is seeking a loan to buy three piglets and pig food to start a new pig-breeding business.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
