Olive is 30 years old, married, and has one child aged two. Her husband works as a charcoal seller. Olive is the group leader of a borrowing group known as Tujijuke in Kinyarwanda, which means “Be literate” in English. This group is composed of sixteen members who have different businesses. Olive sells sodas and local beer and has been doing this business for three years. Olive will use the loan to purchase beans, sorghum and drinks. With the new profits from her expanded business, Olive plans to buy goats for raising and to buy cattle in the future.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
