36-year-old Joseph W. makes common cause with Lutengo Development group B-Mukono. A decade is the period of time he has been running his charcoal, firewood and beef sales businesses in Lutengo-Mukono. Credit for the setting up of this business, he says, goes to his father who, he says, offered him not only financial support but also moral support. Prior to that, his efforts were more concentrated on a shoe sales business.

The longevity and stability in his business operations, he says, all boils down to two factors: diligence and a determined sense of purpose. Joseph is happily married with two children. Weekly, he says, these businesses generate shillings 100,000. With this loan, he says he is going to purchase more bags of charcoal and more firewood to resell.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
