Mrs. Nouth N. is a 37-year-old farmer residing in a rural area of Kompong Tom Province. She feeds some pigs in a pigpen behind her house. Eventually, she will sell her pigs to a slaughterer in four-month cycles. Her husband works cutting firewood, and he has owns a rice hulling machine inside his home for providing rice milling services to his neighbors for extra income.
This couple has two kids, still living with them till present. Usually Mrs. Nouth N. generates around US$3 of profit a day to meet the needs of her family. In order to earn more income, Mrs. Nouth N. will be using the loan to buy more pig feed and piglets to raise.
Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.
