Thirty-nine year old Hellen O. is a farmer from Kisii town in western Kenya. She has been farming for the last fifteen years and employs two farmhands. Her farm produces tea, which she sells through a local tea factory, maize and tomatoes which she sells locally. She mainly depends on her farming income to provide for the basic needs of her family.
She has requested this loan through Juhudi Kilimo of 35,000 KES to purchase and insure a dairy cow. The extra income from this loan will help improve the livelihood of her family. In future, she would like to buy a motorcycle to transport her produce to the market. Her biggest challenge is insufficient capital to expand her farming activities.
She is grateful to Juhudi for their financial support in alleviating poverty.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
