Hezekiah hails from Kisii Town in Western Kenya. He is 67 and is married with 9 children, the majority are now adults. He has been in mixed farming for 20 years with his produce of coffee, maize, tea, sugarcane, bananas and milk sold locally and to established co-operative societies.
He has requested this loan of 45,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and maintain a dairy cow. He believes this will provide enough milk for the family and pay the education fees to educate children. He is also focusing on buying a vehicle in the next five years to help transport his produce to the market.
Hezekiah sees insecurity, low market prices and diseases as the greatest threats to the business.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
About Juhudi Kilimo:
Juhudi Kilimo is a for-profit social enterprise working with small-holder farmers in Kenya to finance purchases of dairy cows, chickens, agricultural equipment, and other assets that create immediate cash flow. Many of the assets are insured to prevent devastating business losses, and targeted technical assistance is provided to farmers, from agricultural training to basic book keeping and local market research.
