María has been selling clothing for six years in a stall in the market in her area. Her business is called "Cynthia". She began this business helping her sister-in-law, but in time decided to continue alone with her own store. She offers her customers all types of clothes like shirts, sweaters, pants, blouses, and dresses. She also lets her customers buy items on credit. Thanks to her work, she has been able to help her husband with the construction of their house, which will give safety and comfort to their children and help with their studies.

In the future, she would like to move the business to her own house and also begin a business selling sweets, because she also sometimes prepares cakes, snacks, and all kinds of sweets.

With this loan, she will purchase clothing for the Christmas season, when she has many sales. Like her eight partners, she is a member of the group "Responsabilidad" [Responsibility], where she holds the office of secretary.

One group member is pictured in the small photo in the top right hand corner because he was not present when the original group photo was taken.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
