Joel has a mixed farm in Nyamira town in western Kenya that produces tea, maize, beans, cabbages and milk. He has been in the farming business for 15 years and sells all his products to the local market. He also earns income from his business of animal trading. His biggest challenge has been animal diseases which affect his production.
Joel is 40 years old. He is married, with 5 school-aged children who all attend school.
He has requested this loan of 30,000 KES through Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow. The proceeds from this loan will go towards the education of his children.
In the future, he would like to expand his farming by increasing his acreage of tea plants and tree seedlings.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
