Eleven people have formed a group to request a loan. They are located in Angkrong village in Kandal Province. The group members selected Mrs. S. Um, a 40-year-old married woman, as the bank president for their group. Each member of the group will use his or her portion of the loan to support his or her individual purpose.

Mrs. S. Um earns her living by breeding pigs. Her husband, Mr. Chhoeng Sieb, who is 48, works as a rice miller; he owns a rice milling machine to support his business. They both work hard on their businesses to support their three children, two of whom are seamstresses in the garment factory and one of whom works locally as a beautician.

Mrs. S. Um is asking for a loan to buy beautician's supplies to support her child's current business.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
