María is one of the members of the “Luz Divina 1 y 2” (Divine Light 1 & 2) group located in Los Alcarrizos which is a very industrialized area in the north part of the city of Santo Domingo. It has a large population that depends on firms and the economy in the main city. Like in many other cities, drinking water and electricity are scarce. The population is composed both of Dominicans and Haitian immigrants.

This Esperanza associate sells men’s, women’s and children’s shoes. María is a single mother of two children. She tells us that her most difficult challenge is getting ahead and helping her children. She enjoys business very much; it’s her favorite activity.

María is excited to receive her 4th loan from Esperanza Internacional having satisfactorily repaid her previous loans and taken a step toward her business’ growth. She has had her business for about 3 years which she started because a girl friend encouraged her to go into the catalogue shoe selling business.

She plans to use her new loan to buy several dozen shoes for men, women and children. She plans to use her profits to cover family expenses and to save. Her dream is to own a house of her own and to be able to stay in business.

Maria es una de los miembros del Grupo Luz Divina 1 & 2; localizado en Los Alcarrizos ubicada al norte de la ciudad de Santo Domingo y es muy industrializada, y con una gran población que también dependen del las empresas y economía de la ciudad principal, en donde como muchas otras ciudades hay escasez de agua potable y de energía eléctrica y con una población de dominicanos y emigrantes haitianos. Esta asociada de Esperanza se dedica a la venta de zapatos, para hombre, mujeres y niños. Maria es madre soltera de 2 hijos, nos dice que su reto o desafío más difícil es poder salir adelante y ayudar a sus sus hijos. Disfruta mucho hacer negocio, por lo que es su actividad favorita.

Maria está muy emocionada de recibir su 4to. préstamo en Esperanza Internacional, después de haber pagado satisfactoriamente sus préstamos anteriores y así haber dado un paso para el crecimiento de su negocio. Ella ha tenido su negocio por alrededor de 3 años, el cual inició por que una amiga la motivo a que entrara en la venta de productos (calzados) por catalogo. Está planificando invertir su nuevo préstamo en la compra de varias docenas de zapatos de hombre, mujeres y niños. Esta Planeando utilizar sus ganancias para suplir sus necesidades como familia y ahorrar. Su sueño es tener su vivienda propia y poder seguir negociando.
