Mrs. Vicenta X., 40, is married. She has nine sons and three daughters. Vicenta is enterprising in order to prepare a better future for her children. She raises small farm animals and tends to a small grocery store she’s managed to have for over ten years.

Vicenta noted that she had to better stock the store in order to improve sales and support her community offering what they need for daily consumption without having to go all the way up to town which is quite distant. This way she is able to earn a few more profits.

She, therefore, gathered together a few friends and neighbors that she has known for over 12 years to form a group because she tries to help not just her own family but also other people in the village.

Each of them is engaged in a different type of activity, such as: fruit sales, small animal raising, clothes making, notions sales, etc.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
