Esther is a farmer from Kitale town in western Kenya. She has been farming for the last ten years and employs one farmhand. Her main products are milk, maize, vegetables and eggs which she sells at the local market. Esther is 38 years old. She is married with six children who are between the ages of 3 and 14. Five of the children are currently attending school.
Esther has requested this loan of 40,000 Kenyan shillings through Juhudi Kilimo to expand her poultry project. She hopes that the extra income from this project will help her improve the well-being of her family. Her biggest challenge has been poultry diseases. In five years' time, she hopes to have expanded her trade to become the major supplier of locally produced eggs at the market.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
