Manuela is one of the members of Grupo Luz de la Esperanza 1 & 2. They are micro-businesses dedicated to selling clothing, natural products, shoes, education, etc. in the city of San Pedro de Macoris, a city famous for soccer players and for the sugar refinery business. The city’s economy is currently dependent on the “Free Zone”, the cement industry, and to some degree other industries such as tourism. Manuela dedicates herself to education and has a small school in her community. She is receiving her second loan, which she will use to invest in books and seats. She also needs to invest in school supplies and make some changes and repairs.

Manuela will use her profits to continue investing in her business, since there is a lot she needs to achieve in order to improve the school. However, she tells us that thanks to the loans that her business is going to keep growing. Her most difficult challenge is to educate and raise her children since they have to study and work at the same time. Her dream is to be able to offer the best education for her community and at the same time to be able to contribute to the community.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
