Mrs. Soem S., 41, is the village bank president, having been selected by the fifteen people in this group loan. They will use their portion of the loan for various ways to support their families living in Chen village in Takeo province.

She is a farmer who owns a half hectare plot of land on which she cultivates rice to sell to support her family and she is also a fish seller in the local market where she is able to earn a large profit. She has some problems because her field contains infertile soil. So, to improve production, Mrs. Soem S. is applying for a loan to buy fertilizer and with the rest of the loan she will hire farming laborers.

Her husband, Mr. Ou Ly, is a recycle seller and a pig breeder. Through these activities, they support four children who are attending school.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
