Gabriel is a farmer from Kisii town in western Kenya. He has been farming for forty years and has employed one farmhand. His main products are milk and maize, which he sells at a local market. He is 67 years old and is married with 10 children who are all adults. Two of the children attend school.
Gabriel has requested this loan from Juhudi Kilimo of 45,000 KES to purchase and insure a dairy cow. The income from the sale of milk will enable him to pay school fees for his children. He aspires to acquire four more dairy cows in five years' time.
His primary challenges are lack of constant labour and lack of feeds, due to unpredictable supply and prices. He is grateful to Juhudi for the financial assistance.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
