“Las Rosas D. San Mateo” (The Roses of San Mateo) is located in the community of San Mateo Milpas Altas in Antigua Guatemala. This group was started eighteen months ago with twelve women who engage in agriculture, tortilla production, and livestock breeding. For this reason, they are utilizing loans from FAPE. The “Rosas D. San Mateo” Bank is in its fourth loan cycle with FAPE. Their leader is Doña Elida T.. She is married and has ten children, nine of whom still live with her in this small community. Six of her children are students at the local school while one lives in Antigua and has a degree in elementary school education. Doña Elida dreams that her children will continue their studies so that they can have better opportunities in the future. Her main business activity is farming. She has been growing green beans, Chinese peas, and Creole peas on her own land for ten years with the help of her husband, children, and seasonal workers. Elida will invest in her farming activities by paying to have her land plowed and cleared. She has the seeds and compost needed for planting because it is necessary for her to have a good harvest and produce a quality crop.

Doña Elida T. Q. has had three previous loans with FAPE and has demonstrated that she is responsible and prompt when making all of her monthly payments. Of all the services, she enjoys the established savings. She is happy with the money she keeps with FAPE because it stays out of her hands and it helps with repaying her loan.

About FAPE

FAPE, the Foundation for the Assistance of Small Businesses, is a nonprofit, socially-minded institution that provides loans to micro-entrepreneurs across Guatemala.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
