The "Formando un Futuro" (Making a Future) community bank consists of 10 women and one man who--thanks to their effort, dedication, and sacrifice--have been able to move forward and give their families a better quality of life.

They have been working with the EDAPROSPO–PROSPERIDAD microfinance partner for a year and a half. Such is the case with Mrs. Paulina (the woman standing up in the photo), who used to live in a prefabricated house for many years.

Today, Paulina sells groceries at a market near her house; with the help of her husband, who works in a factory, she was able to build a humble house of good material using their savings. But the house still lacks a roof and needs some finishing, such as coating the walls with cement, putting tiles in the bathrooms, and installing safer doors.

Paulina wants to finish her house so that she can move her business there and so that she can make life more comfortable for her 3 small children, who are students. At the moment, her eldest daughter takes care of the others while she is at work. Thanks to her hard work and sacrifice, her wish will soon be a reality.

Paulina is satisfied with her achievements to date. She tells us that none of this would have been possible without EDAPROSPO's support; they have given her three loans over the past 18 months.

She will use this loan to expand her business, buying what she needs to build up a good supply of products in her store.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
