Lucio
Lucio B. F. is a 41-year-old who lives with his wife and 4 children in a community called Santa Fe, located in Los Chiles, in the Alajuela province. This community is known for being a mountainous area that is very close to the northern border of this country. Its main economic activities are stockbreeding and agriculture, particularly staple grains, sugar cane, and oranges.


Mr. Lucio has always been known as a courageous and hard-working man. He has been in agriculture his entire life, growing all types of crops. This has allowed him to gain a source of income with which he has been able to provide for his family.


In order to continue with his business, Mr. Lucio needs a ¢604.000 CRC loan so that he can purchase the supplies he needs to maintain his 2 hectares of farmland on which he grows cassava, malanga (a yam-like root vegetable), beans, and corn.


Mr. Lucio is a member of the Crédito Comunal Manantial de Santa Fe company, one of the 100 organizations that have a partnership with EDESA in Costa Rica. This will be his second loan, and with it, he hopes to keep expanding so that he can provide his son with a better future.

Lucio B. F. es un señor de 41 años de edad el cual vive con su esposa y sus 4 hijos en una comunidad llamada Santa Fe localizada en Los Chiles, provincia de Alajuela; está comunidad se destaca por ser una zona montañosa y por estar muy cerca de la frontera norte de nuestro país. Sus principales actividades económicas son la ganadería y la agricultura específicamente se da la siembra de granos básicos, caña de azúcar, naranja.

Don Lucio siempre se ha conocido por señor muy valiente y trabajador. El se ha dedicado a la agricultura toda su vida, produciendo todo tipo de cultivos. Esto le ha permitido tener una fuente de ingresos, con lo que ha logrado darle a su familia lo que ellos necesitan.

Para seguir con su negocio Don Lucio necesita un préstamo de ¢604.000 (seiscientos Cuatro mil colones), para la compra de los insumos para el mantenimiento de 2 hectáreas de tierra donde cosecha diferentes productos como yuca, malanga, frijoles y maíz.

Don Lucio es socio de la Empresa de Crédito Comunal Manantial de Santa Fe, una de las 100 organizaciones socias de EDESA en Costa Rica. Este será su segundo préstamo, y con él espera crecer seguir creciendo para forjar un mejor futuro para su hijo.

As a small and relatively young MFI located in Costa Rica, EDESA has difficulty attracting other sources of capital. Many other microfinance funders do not work in Costa Rica, because overall the country is too rich. However, organizations such as EDESA work with extremely marginalized populations in Costa Rica that really need the access to capital that EDESA provides. By funding EDESA, Kiva lenders are allowing the organization to grow and reach more people than they otherwise would be able to reach.
