Hercilia C., 60, is married and has 7 children. She is one of 7 enterprising women who compose EDAPROSPO-PROSPERIDAD’s “Unidos por el Triunfo” (United for Victory) communal bank.

Hercilia makes purses, caps and bags from fabric and leather (using a sewing machine). She also makes pearl earrings, necklaces and rings. She has been in this line of work for over 30 years. Long ago she used to work for a textile factory and that’s where she learned how to sew and install finishings. This led her to take a correspondence sewing career course at a CETPRO (Technical Productive Education Center). Hercilia also works cleaning a house.

She invests her earnings in work supplies, transportation costs, food and other expenses of her daughter. Her husband contributes to household expenses similarly.

The latest loan that will be granted will be to purchase fabric, leather and other work supplies.

She would like to specialize in some aspect of sewing in the future and to teach crafts courses based on fabric, pearl and leather.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
