Rosemary is a dedicated and hard-working farmer from the town of Kitale in Western Kenya. She has been operating her mixed farm for over 30 years. Her farm produces milk, maize, and beans which she sells locally. She depends on the income from her farm to fulfill the basic needs of her family. Rosemary is 52 years old and married. She has seven children between the ages of 13 and 29 five of whom are still in school. She has requested this loan from Juhudi Kilimo of 41,600 Kenyan Shillings to purchase and insure a dairy cow. She says that the extra income from this loan will enable her to take care of her family's basic needs. She however faces the challenge of fluctuation in market prices and changes in climate conditions that affect the cost of poultry feed. She hopes to increase her milk productivity and enjoy more income. She is grateful to Juhudi for empowering her economically.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
