Raquel
View original language description ↓
Sra. Raquel belongs to the El Abiseo community bank. She lives in Juanjui, a city in the Peruvian region or "departamento" of San Martin. She sells poultry in a local market and she's recently started selling other merchandise--clothes, shoes, CDs, DVDs, earrings, etc.--as well. The businesses generate enough income to pay Raquel's household expenses and educate her children. Thanks to her persistence and drive to get ahead, she's managed to get the things that she's dreamed of.

With a recent loan from Manuela Ramos of S/.3,000 (3,000 Peruvian soles or about US$1,000), to be paid over 4 months, Raquel will buy a flock of 200 chickens--along with feed and other supplies--that she will raise and eventually sell. By supplying her poultry-selling business herself, she will no longer have to spend as much to buy from middle men. She will also invest half the money in expanding her other business, thanks to the huge demand for her products.

Sra. Raquel, 38, is married and has 5 children who depend on her and her husband. Her oldest daughter is in college and the rest are in high school.
