She is requesting this loan to buy seeds, so she can increase her production. She believes this credit is an opportunity to get ahead. Her dream is to have her own stable business, in order to improve her standard of living. The challenges she faces are lack of funds and diseases of her crops. She very much enjoys working.

Maria se dedica a la agricultura, la siembra de café y maíz. Las compras las realizan cada vez que sale la cosecha en Guayaquil y Babahoyo y vende sus productos en la misma localidad y en los alrededores.

This loan is administered by Cooperativa San Jose, a 45,000-member credit union located high in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador’s poorest province, Bolivar. They offer a unique loan called “Ventanillas Rurales” [Window to the Countryside], which uses a group guarantee but is an individual loan with a savings component, mostly to rural borrowers. Due to low savings rates and a history of macroeconomic instability, many traditional loans in Ecuador demand interest rates that are prohibitively high for some borrowers.
