Ester is a single mother of four children aged 15, 13, 10 and 8 years. Ester lives in Bundibugyo, Uganda in the semi-permanent house shown in the picture. She is the head of her family and is responsible for the welfare and education of her children and her two brothers who live with her.
"It’s a big task," she says, but she hopes to succeed by seeing them through.
Ester operates a clothing shop in which she sells clothes, bags, and mattresses. She has operated this business for the last four years. Previously, she sold cocoa, a major cash crop in her area.
The purpose of the loan is to enable Ester to purchase clothes, bags and mattresses to sell in her shop. She says that, with more capital, she will be able to offer her products wholesale to retailers.
