“Discipline Plus” is a group of 28 owners of small businesses chaired by Lucien K.. Its members are jointly liable for loans granted by Kiva through MFI HOPE DRC.

Lucien started a cigarette-selling business in 1997 with a capital investment of $25. After he went bankrupt because of theft, he decided to open a general boutique, which he continues to operates today. With hard work and determination, his business has prospered.

Lucian is happy to be part of one of Hope’s groups. He joined the group in November 2009 and his business has been reinforced through the loan he received. Lucien intends to use this loan to purchase cans and other miscellaneous items to increase the inventory of his boutique in order to increase his profit.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
