Lucas S. C. is 62 years old. He lives with his wife in a community called La Palma de Puerto Jiménez in the Puntarenas province. For many years the population has devoted itself to gold mining, lumber, and farming. The Nacional Corcovado Park was created, which together with the beautiful beaches opened the door to the tourist trade. It is now the most important community in the area.

Lucas worked in the Puerto Jimenez gold mines for many years. Now his life revolves around farming. He produces all types of crops such as rice, corn, cacao, and bananas. He sells his products in the Campesinos market. He sells for a very good price, which allows him to support his family and have a good quality of life.

In order to continue with his production, Lucas needs a loan for 600,000 colones to buy fertilizer and seeds to plant corn. He is sure that this loan will help a lot because the prices of these supplies have greatly increased. In three months he will have the earnings to pay for the loan.

Lucas is a member of the Raíces Capitales S.A,. one of the 100 member organizations of EDESA in Costa Rica. This will be his second loan. He expects to have a great corn harvest this year in order to continue as a small businessman in farming.

More information about this loan

As a small and relatively young MFI located in Costa Rica, EDESA has difficulty attracting other sources of capital. Many other microfinance funders do not work in Costa Rica, because overall the country is too rich. However, organizations such as EDESA work with extremely marginalized populations in Costa Rica that really need the access to capital that EDESA provides. By funding EDESA, Kiva lenders are allowing the organization to grow and reach more people than they otherwise would be able to reach.
