Like many member of the Los Chiles community, Gener is a farmer. He dedicates his time to the planting and harvest of various subsistence and revenue-generating crops including chili peppers among others. Gener is always busy. When he isn´t tending to the needs of his own land, he hires himself out to other farmers in the region, as a paid laborer. This work helps to complement the money earned from the sale of his own produce.
This loan will be used to finance the production of Habanero chili peppers. Specifically, Gener will use this money to purchase seeds, fertilizer, tools, pesticides, and other materials/ingredients necessary to the production of chili peppers. All labor and transportation will be carried out by Gener and his family.
Gener dedicates six hours per day to his work as a hired hand. During this time, his wife carries out domestic tasks and farm work. In the afternoons, Gener joins his wife to work their own plot of land. Gener´s goal is to maintain stability in his family, achieve higher production rates, improve his economic situation and offer a better standard of living to his family.
A major difficulty and limitation for Gener has been his lack of working capital. He hopes to use this loan effectively to improve life on the farm for everyone.

More information about this loan
In Costa Rica, funding for microfinance institutions is hard to come by, and many institutions find themselves having difficulty growing and reaching all the demand for loans that exist. Kiva works with Fundacion Mujer because it attends a very marginalized population in Costa Rica, with a specific focus on women. In addition to the loan, Fundacion Mujer provides specialized training programs for their borrowers on everything from computer classes to salon training. Because of the difficulty in obtaining capital in Costa Rica, Fundacion Mujer cannot serve all the women that need loans. Therefore Kiva plays a unique role in helping Fundacion Mujer grow its portfolio and reach borrowers it otherwise would not be able to.
