Isaac has been operating his mixed farm in Kitale town in Western Kenya for 10 years. He has employed two people from his community to help with the farm work.
Isaac is 28 years old and married with 4 children between the ages of 1½ and 12. Three of his children are currently attending school. Isaac is also a mechanic (pictured on his motorbike and onlooking is one of his children).
He has requested this loan from Juhudi Kilimo of KES.80,000 to start a poultry project and build a dairy unit. He says that he hopes the extra income from this loan will enable him to meet the basic needs of the family. He would also like to expand and increase his productivity in terms of the number of chickens and also practice zero grazing.
His primary challenge has been the fluctuation in the prices of milk and poultry diseases.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
