Mrs. Adelaida is a single mother who has finished the third level of basic education. She has an eight year old son for whose expenses she is completely responsible. She is a weaver and for the past 11 years has created a business making traditional textiles.

Relying on enthusiasm and the drive to improve, she called together some of her neighbors to organize a group in order to be able to solicit a loan. The communal bank is called LAS GOLONDRINAS DE CHAJABAL (The Swallows of Chajabal). The name was elected by all the members and also includes the name of the group’s location. The group consists of 11 women members who dedicate themselves to various activities including animal husbandry, weaving, and selling basic necessities.

The loan will be used to buy primary material and in this way increase the volume of sales. One of the difficulties of owning a business is lack of capital, however Adelaida has been able to continue forward and she hopes that her business will be bigger and more productive.

Doña Adelaida es Madre Soltera, cursó el tercer grado Básico, tiene un hijo de ocho años y ella cubre todos los gastos necesarios de su hijo, ella se dedica a la Tejeduría, (Elaboración del Cortes Típicos), tiene 11 años ya con este negocio. Contando con entusiasmo, deseos de superación, convoca a algunas de sus vecinas para organizar un grupo, y poder solicitar un préstamo. El Banco Comunal se denomina LAS GOLONDRINAS DE CHAJABAL, el nombré fue elegido por todas las integrantes y también incluye el nombre de la ubicación. El grupo cuenta con 11 integrantes mujeres, quienes se dedican a diversas actividades entre ellos podemos mencionar, la crianza de animales, tejeduría, y venta de artículos de consumo diario. El préstamo ella lo utilizará para compra de materia prima y así incrementar el volumen de ventas. Ya que una de las dificultades de ser la dueña del negocio ha sido la falta del capital, pero ha salido adelante y espera que su negocio sea más grande y productivo.

ASDIR (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral Rural - Association for the Development of Rural Communities) is a community-based organization that works to promote development in the villages and communities where it serves. It was founded in 1999 in the village of Nimasac, Totonicapán Department, by a handful of local men and women to support community projects and group loans.
