Mrs. Yeoun S. is a housewife who cooks delicious food for her family while her husband, Mr. Savuth Koem, is a construction worker who is able to earn a low salary to support his family. The couple has a problem because their motorbike is broken. To improve their family living conditions, Mrs. Yeoun S. is asking for a loan to buy a new motorbike to replace this old one. She is a mother of three children; one of whom is a seamstress in a garment factory, the second is attending the local public school, and the third is too small to work or study.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
