Elodie V. is the leader of a Community bank named “Merci Plus”, which is composed of 24 micro-entrepreneurs united in solidarity to receive loans from Kiva through IMF HOPE RDC with the goal of developing their businesses.

Elodie, 28 and married, runs a cellphone booth. She has been in business since 2001, selling eggs with a beginning capital of $70. With hard work and good management, she has been capable of diversifying her business by adding prepaid cellphone cards and wigs to resell in order to increase her working capital. She makes a profit of about $10 per day. Elodie’s ambition is to become a prepaid cellphone cards and wigs provider in her area. As she wants to develop her business, she decided to join one of Hope’s groups in June 2009. She is planning, with the next loan, to purchase dozens of prepaid cards and wigs. Elodie, with good strategies, has succeeded in building up permanent customers. She always talks to her customers, she knows them well by their names, and she never runs out of stock. Elodie has a six year old son who attends school.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
