Joseph L. S., 44 years old, is married to a farmer and they have four children aged between 3 and 10. His business is located in a residential area near a busy road in Kakamega, in the western region of Kenya well known as the sugar belt region for its production of sugarcane. Joseph has been selling items such as rice, flour, oil, detergents, soft drinks and others for the last three years to the local people. He says that this business is profitable. The major challenge he has is high prices for the items he sells, making them unaffordable to some local people. However, he works very hard to keep his business going well. He is using his loan of KES 40,000 to buy more general items to expand his business. He hopes to be a wholesaler in the future. He hopes to give his children quality education. He describes himself as very hardworking, honest and humble.
