Sabina is 45 years old. She is married with 7 children aged between 9 and 22. Four of the children are currently attending school.
She is a farmer from Nyamira town in Western Kenya. She has been practising mixed farming for the past 22 years and has employed one person from her community. Her main products are milk, bananas, beans, maize, tea and coffee which she sells locally. Her biggest challenge in farming is too much rain, which destroys her crops, and animal diseases.
She has requested this loan from Juhudi Kilimo of Kes.30,000 to purchase and insure a dairy cow. The extra income from this loan will help her to pay school fees for her children and to improve their living standards.
In 5 years time she hopes to improve her productivity by purchasing more cows and expanding her farm. She intends to incorporate poultry farming in her activities.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
