Friendly and very hardworking K. Hope, a 42 year old married woman with four children, has been running a retail shop business for over three years. Her thriving business caters to the interests of local customers along the Congo border in Rwebinyonyi trading centre, Rukungiri.

Hope has been earning profits amounting to 150,000 Ugandan shillings on a weekly basis. Her main challenge has been, however, having a small amount of stock due to the hindrance of low capital input in her business. Her recourse has, however, been her teaching job salary and also her small fish-selling business.

With Hope’s sense of determination, the sky seems to be the limit in her drive to establish a firm foothold in this retail business and also in her fledgling fish-selling business. This loan will help her to buy more retail items like sugar and soap as well as more fish to match the increasing demand of her customers.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
