The community bank Vida Plena is made up of women who want to improve the health of their customers through offering natural health products. They are all fighters. The women live in Cuenca, the third most economically important city in Ecuador. Cuenca is known for its churches, the four rivers that surround the city, and the warmth of its people, like these group members.

María G. is entering her second loan cycle, and says that it is a good support for her business. Maria lives in the outskirts of Cuenca, in the Narancay Bajo sector. She is a 36-year-old single mother of 4 children, ages 12 and 6, and 16-year-old twins. The twins go to a high school in the city, and the two younger children are in elementary school. They do not get any support from the father, and are proud to own their own home.
Maria began using Omnilife products 4 years ago and started selling this prestigious product 2 years ago. It is going very well and she only works part-time, since she also dedicates time to her children and family. Her credit will be invested in the purchase of more natural products from Omnilife; her goal is to eventually buy a car to facilitate her sales.

Maria P. lives in the Tarqui parish, and has sold Omnilife products for 4 years. She sells every day without a single day of rest. She leaves to sell her products at 8 am and works until 8 pm. Maria is 42, single, and is the main earner in her household, along with her sister; they live alone with their mother in their own home. She has had two loan cycles in the community bank, and the money she has obtained has allowed her to buy more products. She will invest this credit in more products; her goal is to expand her business in order to improve the economic situation of her home and help her mother.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
