Rafiq A. is a 56-year-old farmer who has bred cattle very successfully for the last 11 years. He is married and has three children who actively help him and his wife. His work requires a lot of effort because Rafiq spends most of the time in the open air, regardless of season. He raises cattle and sells them to the local butchers. He has applied for a loan of 1000 AZN to purchase three calves and increase his profit.
Aqroinvest Credit Union was founded by a group of 32 Imishli farmers in 2001, and has grown to become one of the largest credit unions in Azerbaijan. It boasts a portfolio of nearly $5 million and is wholly owned by its more than 3,500 borrowers, as of December 2011.
