R. Gulnara is 37 years old, married and the mother of two children. She is a refugee from the Azerbaijan- Armenian conflict in the Gubadli region, which is situated in the west partern of Azerbaijan in the Caucasus region. Right now, she lives in the city of Sumqayit. As she has a low-income, she is very vulnerable to shifts in the local economy. Gulnara has a small flock of sheep. She buys lambs and raises them for half a year. She sells the sheep in the local market and then buys new lambs to reaise. She spends the profit providing for her family's necessities. The business is very interesting but sometimes demands more funding than she has. Her husband helps her.
Timely investments are important for Gulnara. In 2004, Gulnara borrowed $500 from Normicro and expanded her business. Currently, Gulnara would like to borrow a $1,500 loan in order to acquire five small sheep and raise them. She will repay the loan within 16 months. She hopes eventually to expand her business and that it will further improve the living conditions of her family.
