The “Las Cabañitas” (Little Cabins) communal bank, located in Villa Fatima neighborhood, Escuadrón Velasco Street, is in its 2nd cycle composed of 10 members; it was established on 24 November 2009 thanks to the initiative of a group of women.

Fabiola is president, Fátima is treasurer and Miriam is secretary. There are women in the group who sell cosmetics, clothing and other items; one is a teacher. The meetings are on Thursdays at 9:30am in Sandra’s house. They are new clients but happy to cooperate with Emprender because in their communal bank training they established a savings projection that at the end of the cycle they’ll learn to save and share with their friends every 14 days.

Fabiola, president, is married and has two small children. She’s an itinerant cosmetics salesperson in various popular markets, zones and places where she works. Besides this work, she’s also a teacher and she does well with her business. She learned to save and to have self-esteem in the communal bank; she feels useful with the training she gets. Fabiola’s dream is to have her own display case, her store, and to make progress in life thus improving her quality of life.

All the members are grateful to Emprender and to Kiva for the trust placed in them by granting the loan.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
