Auxiliadora
Auxiliadora López, 61, lives with her husband and two children in a community called Santa Fe in Los Chiles, Alajuela province. This community is known for being a mountainous zone and for being very near the country’s northern border. Its main commercial activities are cattle raising and agriculture, specifically basic grains, sugar cane and oranges.

Auxiliadora set up a small grocery store several years ago in her home. This activity has made it possible for her to have a profitable commercial activity that helps her improve her quality of life.

She currently needs a 605.000 colones loan to buy building materials and supplies to enlarge her store so that she can offer better customer service. She comments that the service she provides is very important and she has many regular customers so she needs more space.

Auxiliadora is a member of Empresa de Crédito Comunal Manantial de Santa Fe (Santa Fe Spring communal bank), one of EDESA’s 100 member organizations in Costa Rica. This will be her first loan and she hopes to improve her personal and economic status with it as well as to make her business into a micro business.

Auxiliadora López es una señora de 61 años de edad la cual vive con su esposo y sus 2 hijos en una comunidad llamada Santa Fe localizada en Los Chiles, provincia de Alajuela; está comunidad se destaca por ser una zona montañosa y por estar muy cerca de la frontera norte de nuestro país. Sus principales actividades económicas son la ganadería y la agricultura específicamente se da la siembra de granos básicos, caña de azúcar, naranja.

Doña Auxiliadora se desde hace algunos años inicio su propio negocio una pulpería (tiendita de abarrotes) para vender productos básicos a sus vecinos en su propia casa; con este negocio ha logrado tener una actividad económica rentable que la ayuda a mejorar su calidad de vida.

Actualmente ella necesita un préstamo por ¢605.000(seiscientos cinco mil colones) para comprar los materiales necesarios para ampliar su local y así poderle brindar una mejor atención a sus clientes. Ella comenta que el servicio que ella brinda es muy importante ya que tienen muchos clientes y por eso necesita más espacio.

Doña Auxiliadora es socia de la Empresa de Crédito Comunal Manantial de Santa Fe, una de las 100 organizaciones socias de EDESA en Costa Rica. Este será su primer préstamo y con él espera crecer más a nivel personal y económico. Y hacer de su negocio una gran microempresa.

As a small and relatively young MFI located in Costa Rica, EDESA has difficulty attracting other sources of capital. Many other microfinance funders do not work in Costa Rica, because overall the country is too rich. However, organizations such as EDESA work with extremely marginalized populations in Costa Rica that really need the access to capital that EDESA provides. By funding EDESA, Kiva lenders are allowing the organization to grow and reach more people than they otherwise would be able to reach.
