Jean-Claude N. is a businessman, aged 30. He lives in a township of Kamenge (Bujumbura-Mairie). He and his wife both have humanities degrees from secondary school, scientific section and technical humanities respectively. He sells cosmetics and manages a restaurant in the Kamenga market, whereas his wife has not yet found work corresponding to her degree in computer sciences. Jean-Claude began his business in 2004, right when he graduated from high school. Turame came along and allowed him to extend his businesses, he says.

He is the father of three children, twins aged five and a little boy of one month. The twins are in kindergarten. He would like his children to finish medical school so that they can care for people.

Jean-Claude is requesting a Kiva loan to be able to buy more cosmetics and also to bolster his restaurant business so as to increase his income. This will allow him to feed his family, pay school fees for his children, and still have some savings. He is hopeful that his businesses will allow him to live a happy and successful life.

Jean-Claude prefers Turame to other MFIs and banks because of its low interest rate and its longer term loans. He is now on his sixth loan with his group 'Rafiki Mwema' which translates as "Fine Friend".

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
