Kimutai M. is a 26-year-old farmer near Litein town in the South Rift Valley of Kenya. He's been farming for five years and sells milk through the Kenya Cooperative Creameries. He also earns an income from the small-scale farming of maize. He says that the main challenges to his business are poor milk marketing and the high cost of transport.
Kimutai requested this first loan through Juhudi Kilimo for 45,000 KES to purchase a dairy cow. He says that this will help his family's overall income. In the future, he would like to process his own milk to sell at the local market, purchase more quality dairy cows, and buy more land for farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
