Kim Y., 58, is an older woman who lives with her husband and seven of her children in Takeo province. She grows rice, but her plantation is just enough to support her family members. Her husband is a fisherman. He catches and sells fish at the local market. On average, he is able to make about US$ 2.50 in profit a day. Three of the children are in school, while two are construction workers.
Every month, Kim Y. spends about US$ 30 on food, US$ 5 on utilities, US$ 15 on her children's education, US$ 5 on family transportation and another US$ 15 on miscellaneous. So to reduce their transportation costs, Kim Y. needs to take out a loan to purchase a motorbike.
