Confiance ["confidence"] Group

The seven members of the Confiance [“Confidence”] group, six married women and one single woman, average 39 years of age and three children and live in monogamous families in Ouayerma I, a district in the town of Sikasso (the third administrative region of Mali). They collaborate with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso in order to better satisfy their customers’ needs. This would be their tenth joint loan, with the previous nine loans having been duly reimbursed. They are engaged in various business activities, such as selling food condiments, ginger, heating wood, potatoes, soaps and shoes. Kadi S., the group’s leader, buys and resells condiments. Her business is well-known and popular in Sikasso, where she has a lot of customers. With this new loan she plans to purchase packs of condiments of various types and quality grades. She buys her stock at the big market of Sikasso and in nearby villages. Her goods are sold mostly for cash at the different markets in Sikasso as well as in residential areas, to a customer base composed of both women and men. The members of the Confiance group anticipate obtaining a monthly income of 13,500 West African francs for each member, a part of which will be put aside as savings and the rest reinvested in the business.

Les sept membres du groupe Confiance (6 femmes mariées et 1 célibataire) ont une moyenne d’âge de 39ans, 3 enfants et vivent dans des familles monogames à Ouayerma I, un des quartiers de la ville de Sikasso (3ème région administrative du Mali).
Elles collaborent avec l’institution de microfinance Soro Yiriwaso afin de satisfaire le besoin de leur clientèle et sont à leur dixième prêt solidaire et tous les neufs précédents ont été bien remboursés.
Elles mènent diverses activités qui sont entre autres la vente des condiments alimentaires, de gingembre, de bois de chauffe, de pomme de terre, de savons et de chaussures.
Kadi S. qui la présidente du groupe fait l’achat et la vente de condiments. Elle est très sollicitée et appréciée à Sikasso où elle reçoit beaucoup de clients.
Avec ce nouveau prêt, elle compte acheter, des paquets de condiments alimentaires de différentes sortes et qualités. Elle s’approvisionne au grand marché de Sikasso ville et dans les localités avoisinantes. Les marchandises sont vendues, la plupart au comptant, dans les différents marchés de Sikasso et dans les quartiers à une clientèle composée d’hommes et de femmes.
Les membres du groupe Confiance envisagent réaliser chacune un bénéfice mensuel moyen de 13.500FCFA dont une partie sera utilisée en épargne et l’autre partie sera investie dans les activités.

Soro Yiriwaso is a microfinance institution that works primarily in rural and semi-urban areas of Mali to provide underprivileged communities with access to financial services.The organization facilitates access for disadvantaged clients, particularly women, to new resources and services, fostering solidarity and cooperation among its clients. Kiva lenders’ funds will enable Soro Yiriwaso to expand its outreach and target even more underserved Malians involved in business and agriculture.

The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
