Carlos
Carlos Castellón OC. is a 36 years old gentleman who lives with his wife and child in a community called Santa Fe, which is located in Los Chiles, Alajuela Province. The community is situated in a mountainous area near the northern border of the country. The main economic activities are ranching and farming, with specific emphasis on the cultivation of grains, sugar cane, and oranges.

Don Carlos has been raising cattle for several years. He sells to the neighbors in his community who are very satisfied with quality of his products, especially the milk. Don Carlos is grateful for the progress of his business, which will allow him to build his own home. He is still living at his parents’ house with his wife and daughter.

At the moment, Don Carlos wants to obtain a microloan in the amount of 665,000 CRC so that he can buy grass seeds and maintain the corral where he keeps his cows. This will help him improve his business and generate the income he needs to build his own house.

Don Carlos is a member of Manantial de Santa Fe Communal Credit Enterprise, one of 100 member organizations that make up EDESA in Costa Rica. This is his first loan and he hopes to grow personally and financially. He assures us that this loan provides great motivation for him to work hard so that he can access future loans and become a successful micro-entrepreneur.

Carlos Castellón OC. es un señor de 36 años de edad el cual vive con su esposa y su hijo en una comunidad llamada Santa Fe localizada en Los Chiles, provincia de Alajuela; está comunidad se destaca por ser una zona montañosa y por estar muy cerca de la frontera norte de nuestro país. Sus principales actividades económicas son la ganadería y la agricultura específicamente se da la siembra de granos básicos, caña de azúcar, naranja.

Desde hace ya varios años Don Carlos se dedica a la ganadería de doble propósito. Logra vender sus productos a los vecinos de su comunidad quienes se muestran muy satisfechos con la calidad de los productos que ofrece, en especial La leche. Don Carlos considera que gracias al progreso de este proyecto, el podrá construir su propia casa ya que aun vive en la de sus padres con su hija y esposa.

En estos momentos don Carlos desea obtener un microcrédito por ¢665000 (seiscientos sesenta y cinco mil colones), para comprar semilla de pasto y mejorar las condiciones del corral donde tiene sus vacas. Esto le ayudara a mejorar su negocio y generar los ingresos necesarios para construir su propia casa.

Don Carlos es socio de la Empresa de Crédito Comunal Manantial de Santa Fe, una de las 100 organizaciones socias de EDESA en Costa Rica. Este será su primer préstamo y con él espera crecer más a nivel personal y económico. Asegura que este crédito ha sido una gran motivación y trabajara fuertemente para seguir teniendo acceso a ellos y convertirse en un microempresario exitoso.

As a small and relatively young MFI located in Costa Rica, EDESA has difficulty attracting other sources of capital. Many other microfinance funders do not work in Costa Rica, because overall the country is too rich. However, organizations such as EDESA work with extremely marginalized populations in Costa Rica that really need the access to capital that EDESA provides. By funding EDESA, Kiva lenders are allowing the organization to grow and reach more people than they otherwise would be able to reach.
